Shining Bank Slide

One day we loaded up the quads and went to Shining Bank Slide, which is a cliff-like bank several hundred feet down. From the viewpoint at the top we could see a quad down at the bottom, but since there is no trail down there we wondered how it had got there. While we were enjoying the view, along came another quadder. When She asked him if he'd seen the quad at the bottom, he sheepishly admitted that it was his. Then he told us what had happened. Last fall, while riding with a group of friends, he had come up the last part of the hill in 3rd gear, but believed he was in 2nd. When he got to the edge, he punched down two gears, believing he was in neutral, and then revved his engine. But since he was in 1st, he launched over. He didn't remember much about it after that but they took him out by helicoptor and his list of injuries was extensive. He had lived on painkillers all winter, but now he was there to try to figure out how to get his quad out of there. He pointed out his goggles part way down, about where he would connect with land (he would freefall the first 40 ft). He didn't remember much about when he hit, but his list of injuries was extensive: wrists, pelvis, etc. Anyway it was all very interesting, and we are planning a return trip back up there to see if he has recovered his quad.
